AML Training Australia

Staff training is a core requirement of every AML/CTF program in Australia. Your team needs to understand their obligations, recognise the warning signs of money laundering and terrorism financing, and know how to respond when something doesn't look right. At One AML, we deliver practical, tailored AML/CTF training for businesses across every regulated sector. We give your staff the knowledge and confidence to put their training into practice.

We’re proud to assist small to enterprise-scale businesses across all industry sectors.

What Is AML Training?

AML training equips staff with the knowledge they need to understand and meet their AML/CTF obligations in their day-to-day roles. Under the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Act 2006, every reporting entity must provide AML/CTF training to employees whose responsibilities are relevant to managing money laundering and terrorism financing (ML/TF) risk.

Training is not a one-off exercise. AUSTRAC expects it to be ongoing, role-specific and updated whenever your risk environment, regulatory obligations or business activities change.

Effective AML training covers:
  • Your legal obligations under the AML/CTF Act
  • Your business's specific ML/TF risks and typologies
  • Customer due diligence and identification requirements
  • How to recognise red flags and suspicious activity
  • Suspicious Matter Reporting (SMR) procedures
  • Record-keeping obligations
  • The consequences of non-compliance, for the business and individually

Who Needs AML Training?

Any employee whose role involves dealing with customers, transactions or compliance processes needs AML/CTF training. This generally includes:

This includes:
  • Frontline staff members who deal directly with customers
  • Compliance and risk teams
  • Senior management and directors
  • Your appointed AML/CTF Compliance Officer
  • New starters, as part of onboarding
  • Anyone involved in customer due diligence, transaction monitoring or reporting

The depth and focus of training should reflect each person's role. A frontline staff member needs to recognise red flags in day to day interactions. Your Compliance Officer needs a deeper understanding of regulatory obligations and reporting requirements.

AML Training for Tranche 2 Businesses

The AML/CTF Amendment Act 2024 brings thousands of new businesses into the AML/CTF regime from 1 July 2026, including lawyers, accountants, real estate agents, conveyancers and high-value dealers. For many of these businesses, AML training is an entirely new requirement.

If your business is captured under Tranche 2, your staff need to understand:
  • That your business is now a reporting entity under the AML/CTF Act
  • What designated services your business provides and how those trigger obligations
  • Customer due diligence processes, including identity verification, beneficial ownership checks and PEP and sanctions screening
  • How to identify and verify customers
  • What ML/TF risks look like in your specific industry
  • When and how to escalate concerns internally

Training your team properly before 1 July 2026 is one of the most important steps in becoming compliant. A program without trained staff to operate it is not a functioning compliance program.

How One AML Delivers AML Training

We design training that is relevant to your business, your industry and the roles of the people receiving it. We do not deliver generic, one-size-fits-all sessions.

Our process includes:
  1. Tailored Content: We build training content around your specific business, your designated services and the ML/TF risks identified in your risk assessment. Staff learn what actually applies to their work, not abstract regulatory theory.
  2. Role-Based Delivery: We structure training by role, so frontline staff, compliance teams and senior management each receive content relevant to their level of responsibility.
  3. Practical Scenarios: We use real-world scenarios and typologies relevant to your sector so staff can recognise red flags in practice, not just in theory.
  4. Flexible Format: We can deliver training as live sessions, recorded video content or written guidance materials, depending on what suits your team and business operations.
  5. Ongoing Refreshers: AML training is not a once-off event. We support businesses with refresher training to keep staff knowledge current as regulations, risks and your business evolve.

What Good AML Training Looks Like

AUSTRAC does not expect a tick-box exercise. Training needs to genuinely equip your staff to identify and respond to ML/TF risk. Strong AML training programs typically include:

  • Induction training for all new staff before they begin customer-facing or compliance duties
  • Annual refresher training for existing staff
  • Targeted training when your risk assessment or business activities change materially
  • Records of who has been trained, when and on what content
  • A way to assess whether staff have understood the material, not just attended

Documentation also matters. AUSTRAC will expect to see evidence that training occurred, who attended and what was covered. One AML helps you maintain proper training registers as part of your broader AML/CTF program.

AML Training as Part of Your Compliance Program

Training does not operate in isolation. It connects directly to the rest of your AML/CTF program. Effective training relies on:

  • A clear AML risk assessment that identifies what staff need to be trained on
  • Defined policies and procedures that training should reinforce
  • A reporting register to track training completion and outcomes
  • Practical, plain-language documentation your team will actually use
  • An AML/CTF Compliance Officer who understands the training content and can answer staff questions

If you do not yet have your AML/CTF program, risk assessment or registers in place, we can build these alongside your training so everything works together. See our [AML/CTF Program] and [AML Risk Assessment] pages for more detail.
